Really, if this wasn't so hideous, that might be funny. It's not funny

Survived our 2nd night at home.

And there we have it. I thought I would post an update to let everyone know that we are, in fact, all still alive. Mom and Dad even *feel* a bit more alive, but that most likely has something to do with Nana watching the baby after the last feeding so we could get some sound sleep w/o every "Mwua-?" waking us up.

So, with the handy dandy feeding tubey thingy we managed to get through the night relatively quickly with Mom only up for about 30 minutes at a time. She even managed to do it once all by herself. I'm not sure how she pulled that off actually. She must have woken up just as Brenna was starting to stir and taken her into the living room. Nana was just on the other side of the kitchen and even she didn't wake up and come in until Mom was just about done.

She said she wanted to make sure she could do it on her own. Makes sense, and is part of that stubbornness that I love her for (that's a double edged sword tho) but she did manage to do it.

We made sure Nana got a good chunk of sleep once as well by keeping Brenna in the room w/ us for a feeding so that she wouldn't wake up and come check on us.

MEDICAL NOTE: We got word from the lab this morning. Brenna's jaundice is evidently low enough now that we no longer have to use that stupid light thing. We're still gonna let her get some good sun through a window today (if it decides to come out at all - kinda rainy so far).

Oh, and if you see Mom out and about in the next few days/weeks be sure to compliment her on her husbands fashion sense (since she's wearing MY shirts now - hers are a little to tight around the "rim", especially now that her milk is coming in).

I think its sexy, kind of. But of course, I would, and as she would say I am also "biased".

WTF is with the Brits?

Over the last six months, more stories have been told about draconian measures taken against photographers in Britain. Apparently, *many* photographers have been pretty terribly hassled by government representatives and other "official" types for photographing public institutions and public places. Apparently, the line is that photographing in public areas has somehow turned into some kind of terrorist related action.

If that wasn't insane enough, this is the second report this week of a public outcry of "pedophiles" towards photography hobbyists. The first was towards a father attempting to take pictures of his kid on a slide. Apparently, other parents kicked up a huge fuss that their kid was going to get caught in the picture, and he was some kind of pervert that would use the pictures for his own sick gratification.

Now, we've got a report of an old woman with a camera being told she could not take a picture of an empty kiddy pool, because she could be a pedophiles.

http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=232145&in_page_id=34

Seriously. What the hell is the world coming to? People, if you want to be concerned about pedophiles and terrorist, suspicious behavior does not come in the form of somebody's granny wandering about taking snapshots or tourists taking pictures of public malls. Damn, is humanity losing any ability to have any common sense whatsoever? The punchline to this is that Britain is becoming filthy with public cameras. Who says that the person pulling the paycheck isn't a pedophile him or herself?

Merry Meet!

I was introduced to this community recently by a friends who's opinions I respect. I've been browsing/lurking for a week or so, and figured it was time to 'come out' so to speak.

By way of general introduction, I'm a married 40 year old with an 18 year old daughter in college. I live in the Mid Atlantic area in a nice, tree lined middle class neigborhood where fortunately the neigbors don't mind that the folks at 202 are a 'bit unusual'. I work in the mortgage industry and so of course, due to current market conditions, I drink a lot :D.

Bi/Poly: My first crush was on a girl, and my first kiss was from a girl. I cannot recall a time when I did not appreciate the female form, but until recently just found the right companions in men. I've been mostly happily married to the same guy for 20 years now with no regrets. A few years ago however, I met a woman that turned me inside out. Long story short, after a few years of dancing around it we finally acted on the undeniable attraction between us. It was wonderful! My husband was OK with it, and was involved as well.

We are no longer involved with this woman [a mutual agreement made in love and respect for good reasons] but the experience DID open a Pandora's Box for me.

My husband and I have discussed it and he is supportive of me pursing a woman [with or without his involvment] as long as we maintain open and honest communication about it. Until recently it was all an academic discussion anyway because I'd not really met another woman I was interested in being intimate friends with. That MAY have changed..we shall see. I already know she's a pretty good kisser!

Pagan: I'm a solitary practioner of electic Left Hand Paganism. I dilike the appelation "Witch" because even now it carries a lot of conotations I just don't want to be asociated with, and not just the warts and pointy hat [have one, not the other :)]. I DO believe in a Higher Power, and believe that "The God/desses are all manifestations of the Divine. I don't have a problem with Christ, or Muhammad, or Buddah, or The Bab, or any of the enlightened people that have come along and tried to give Human Kind a hand. I DO have a problem with organized religion and religion as an excuse to control and abuse people, on a small scale or a global one. i do what I can to support Pagan rights, AND Human rights, and to live a 'sacred life'. I'm not perfect at any of it, but it's about the journey, not the destination.

I do occasionally participate in Wiccan/Pagan workshops and festivals, and can sometimes be found at ASW rituals and workshops although I do not follow thier tradition. Hopefully the husband and I will be attending the "Fall Frolic" Pagan Gathering in PA in September.

At the same time I met the woman I spoke of earlier, I had a pretty intense religious experience [details available upon request LOL] and have since then been working primarily with Kali as my Avatar of the Divine. Not an EASY path, but one that has helped me grow quite a bit.

Geek: Mainly a history and gamer geek. I've been involved with the SCA for over a decade and with RPG's for more than twice that. I've written novels about some of my characters that THANKFULLY will never see publication. I've played D&D, GURPS, Chill, Flashing Blades, Star Wars, Call of Cuthulu, Shadow Run [a favorite], VTM, ....oh...I should stop now huh? LOL. Currently I'm between gaming groups but some of my friends are after me to run a VTM game 'old school' style. I'm still considering it. I've done a little with board and card based game systems, but with the exception of MUNCHKIN they just don't do it for me. Give me dice and the smell of paper, DM screens and the sounds of furiouly turning pages as the GM smiles!!

My husband and I are also students of the Victorian/Edwardian era, both the historical and the Darkly Romantic. When we can we take pleasure in spending time in a couple of the nearby metropolitan areas "Gothic" scenes. Alas, since this means a drive of several hours, you can find us hauting local cemeteries, tea rooms, and antique stores to get our 'fix'

I also enjoy reading about and exploring anciet Egypt, Greece and Rome, The British Isles, the Far East, Indo-Asia, the list is pretty long. I guess as long as it's NOT American and happened at least 100 yrs ago I'd probably look into it!! LOL. I belong to a couple of local preservation committees.

So that's a glimpse of me. Hope no one fell asleep reading, and feel free to check out my journal and friend me if you like.

Slydial?

There is a whole gaggle of weird and interesting things running about. Therefore, I will be a total post whore today.

Apparently there is a new beta web service called Slydial. Use the service, and you can automatically bypass a live phone number, and connect direct to voice mail on any phone number.

While this could be used for "not bothering people," we all know what it is used for. Blowing off people, and not having the balls to do it over the phone. *Sigh*

For your blowing off people convenience: http://www.slydial.com/

Brandon

My dear friend Brandon, whom I met in Missouri not long before I moved to Virginia, came to visit. I love that. He's on a whirlwind tour up the east coast, and he made me a stop on the tour (as is understandable). He arrived by train around 3:45 Thursday (train was about an hour late, boo), and his train out to DC left Main Street Station close to 10:30 this morning. Very quick visit, but I'll take that over not seeing him at all.

It's been about two years since we last palled around. That was the crazy trip up to New York and Sandy Hook. Fun.

I really didn't know of much going on, so all we did was hang out, really. Did food at Crossroads Cafe (southside), walked all over Belle Isle, taking lots of good pictures, and we ended up going to the Byrd Theater with Ilse.

Poor Ilse, we both had already seen Made of Honor, but we went again for Brandon. Too bad there wasn't a better picture playing. I still stand by my words that the person in charge of scheduling movies there should be shot and replaced. There was no reason that movie should have been held over another week. It was really not good the second time around. I don't think I'll ever have to watch that movie again. EVER.

What was really fun was that I just started dog sitting for Bruce on the same day that Brandon arrived. Few people who read this know Bruce or the dogs, but one of them, Belle, is young and she is terrified of people. We believe someone owned her before and abused her. People like that should be shot. So I was wondering how she would handle having a stranger around. She was actually on pretty good behavior, and what was really surprising was that when it came time to sleep, she jumped up on the bed that we were both in and acted like nothing was wrong. How precious. And I was supremely relieved at not having to endure barking Belle all night long or having to sleep in a different room as Brandon.

So cute, Brandon is.

For breakfast, we went to Capt'n Buzzys on Church Hill, and I was wondering if my former teacher Kim Chen would walk in (she lives across the street from it), and sure enough, she and her son Doug walked in, and it was good to catch up with her and relate my wretched horror stories not having a job yet but also the good news of what's happening lately. And her son is looking really good these days. He will be a sophomore this fall, and he is growing into his weight (was a pudgy half-Anglo, half-Asian kid), and is becoming a good-looking guy.

So, now UPDATE: Portsmouth asked me to send them references, which means I am still in the running down there. SWEET. I need to get a CD made of my studio and send to Fredericksburg. That's about it.

No Gender Differences In Math Performance

But is it true? After sifting through mountains of data - including SAT results and math scores from 7 million students who were tested in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act - a team of scientists says the answer is no. Whether they looked at average performance, the scores of the most gifted children or students' ability to solve complex math problems, girls measured up to boys.
